Tiger Woods stuns golf with 2025 Ryder Cup announcement
Some news came out Monday morning that golf fans probably weren’t expecting.
Woods is expected to step down as captain of Team USA at the 2025 Ryder Cup, according to a report by James Corrigan of The Telegraph. Arguably the greatest golfer in the history of the game, Woods was expected to succeed Zach Johnson as the man to lead the U.S. to one of the most prestigious events in all of sports.
Instead, Woods appears to have politely declined, citing his “long-standing involvement in peace talks between the PGA Tour and the Saudi Public Investment Fund, which has provided funding for LIV,” the paper reported.
Tiger Woods. With Woods out of the running, the captaincy is expected to be selected from among Keegan Bradley, Stewart Cink, Fred Couples and Davis Love III. According to Corrigan, Woods was expected to take on the captaincy role if an agreement could be reached to shorten the time, but no such agreement was reached, leading to his withdrawal.
The 2025 Ryder Cup will be held on American soil, at Bethpage Black near Manhattan. The 2023 Ryder Cup, which Team Europe won comfortably, was held at the Marco Simone Golf Club in Rome, Italy.
